Welcome to the home page of Pekka Väyrynen. I'm Professor of Moral Philosophy in the School of Philosophy, Religion, and History of Science (PRHS) at University of Leeds, where I teach and research philosophy. I direct the Centre for Ethics and Metaethics (CEM). I'm also the Director of Research for the School as a whole.
My teaching and research interests focus on moral philosophy, with a particular emphasis on metaethics. Other areas of interest relevant to my work include metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of language. I'm available and keen to supervise graduate work in ethics and metaethics broadly construed. Currently I supervise or co-supervise PhD theses on constitutivism in ethics, moral deference, moral status, and the ethical implications of modal realism.
My published work spans a wide range of issues concerning the semantics, metaphysics, and epistemology of ethics, including "thick" concepts in ethics, normative explanation, moral generalism and particularism, moral epistemology, and the relationship between value and reasons. My work has been supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and a grant from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013). The latter helped me organize several workshops under CEM, including Naturalism: Ethical and Metaphysical, Value Concepts and Normative Disagreement.
I regularly perform peer review. I'm enthusiastic about open access journals, and serve as a section editor for one of them. I'm an associate editor of a specialist journal in my field. I also co-edit the ethics section of a survey article journal. Since 2012 I've neither refereed for nor submitted to Elsevier and Springer journals because, even compared to other for-profit publishers, they charge libraries unreasonable prices for access.
Before coming to Leeds in 2008 as Senior Lecturer, I completed my PhD in the Sage School of Philosophy at Cornell University in 2002, and then worked as Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at UC Davis in 2002-08. You can find more details on my CV (pdf).
